GEMMA
Sleep would not come to me that nightâand neither did Dravos. With my mind wide awake, I paced the two rooms. I tried to lay in bed and sleep, but my thoughts tormented me so much that it was useless.
Time was hard to tell without a sun or moon rising and no clock. But something in my circadian rhythm told me it was nighttime, and I should be sleeping. Instead, I paced my new prison like a caged animal. And thatâs what I felt like too.
A caged animal whose master had grown tired of it.
That thought brought tears to my eyes. And not only because of the utter uncertainty of my future.
Dravos never returned to me.
I was a nervous wreck by the time the doors swooshed open. Expectantly, I turned and almost cried his name. But when I saw Li-Sur standing there instead of Dravos, I was glad I didnât.
âApologies, Lady Gemma, but the Overlord instructed me to ready you for transport.â
An icy hand reached for my heart. âTransport?â I asked in a quaking voice.
The little green alien nodded. âWe are about to land on Nynthar, and the overlord instructed me to take charge of your quarters and well-being.â
âOh,â I uttered at a loss for words. What did that mean? My mind screamed.
âDo not worry. I will procure the best quarters for you, Lady Gemma.â He assured me and began hurrying through the chambers, collecting my meager belongings.
âLook, Lady Gemma, Nynthar.â Li-Sur pointed towards the large panoramic window, and my gaze automatically followed.
I hadnât even noticed that we slowed. Now I could look out into space again without becoming dizzy. But instead of the black of space dotted with bright stars, my eyes fell on a large brownish-looking planet, surrounded by three moons, two suns, and another lighter brown planet. Li-Sur pointed at the larger, darker one.
Quietly, I stepped closer to the window. Whatever fate had in store for me, I had a feeling I would find it on that planet.
I put my palm against the cold glass, needing something physical to ground me before my wildly beating heart would make me faint.
âNynthar,â I murmured.
What future did that planet hold for me?
âIt doesnât look like much from up here, but trust me, you will fall in love with its beauty, Lady Gemma,â Li-Sur assured me.
I hoped I would be given the time to do so. âIâm sure I will.â
The spaceship changed course and began to drop. Soon one of the suns, two moons, and the other planet were out of sight.
The first rugged-looking mountains came into view, and I wondered why I didnât feel any change. There was no rattling as we broke through the atmosphere. My ears didnât pop as I had been told happened during flight.
For a fraction of a second, panic overcame me at the thought of whether I would even find breathable air down there. But then I reminded myself that I hadnât encountered that particular problem yet. All these space creatures seemed to be oxygen breathers.
